Key Tips Prevent Dryer Fires

One of the most common household fires is caused by dryers. When they happen, they can be very dangerous, costly, and a huge hassle to deal with. We here at Alpha Appliance Services Inc. have come up with a blog to discuss the 4 key steps to drastically reduce your chance of you getting a dryer fire. If you ever require any dryer repairs, make sure to contact us to help you!

Get a Professional to Install Your Dryer

This is the first and most important step. Doing this step will ensure that your dryer is properly installed. Professionals know the installation process of different units, such as an electric dryer or a gas one. They also know how to install combo washer/dryers and individual units. There are certain recommendations from specific manufacturers that need to be followed when installing, this includes things like the vent pipe. The cost of having a professional install your dryer is well worth the cost when you’re talking about things like safety and proper installations.

Regular Maintenance Servicing

The most common cause for dryer fires is a lack of maintenance and cleaning. Some places that need to be cleaned are behind where lint is collected. It is recommended to get your dryer properly cleaned, at the very least, once a year. You should also be inspecting your vent and hose at least twice a year. The best way to guarantee a proper inspection and cleaning of your dryer is to hire a professional appliance repair company to do your deep clean and check for any issues. This type of professional cleaning can include things like the interior chassis. Getting your dryer cleaned drastically reduces the accumulation of lint in places it shouldn’t be. When you have a properly cleaned dryer, you can rest easy knowing that it will not start an accidental house fire. While you have a professional looking at your dryer, they can also check out your exhaust and venting, to make sure that it is in proper working order as well.

Don’t Have Flammable Things by Your Dryer

Even though lint build up is a main cause for dryer fires, it is not the only cause. It is highly advisable to not, under any circumstances, have the following flammable things stored around or on top of your dryer; boxes, cleaning products, baskets of clothes, and any other flammable items. It is best to keep all clutter away from around your dryer. This will help to ensure that your chance of a fire is very low and that if a fire does start, makes sure that it can’t easily spread, if you have no clutter and flammable things for it to spread to.

Take Out the Lint!

The last, and most important piece of advice is to always clean out your lint from the trap. We recommend you do this before or right after each use. With lint being the leading cause for dryer fires, removing the lint will take away the ignition that starts the fires. Your dryer can get up to about 550 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s not a wonder how lint dryer fires start. When you remove the lint for the trap, double check for any residual lint in the cavity where the trap sits. It’s the lint that gets into the cavity of the dryer that usually starts a fire, not the lint in the trap.
