Why Sishwasher Not Draining

When you wash your dishes in a dishwasher, more often than not, they will come out spotless, shiny and smelling amazing. Even so, problems can arise and things can get in the way of your dishes being cleaned properly. In some cases, the machine itself may become non-functional or faulty— this much is true when you notice standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher.

When you notice this odd occurrence, it is likely because your dishwasher is not draining properly (or at all). This kind of issue eventually leads to unclean dishes and in some cases, scalding (if the temperature of the water is too hot). In addition to all of these issues, you may very well end up having to manually dry all of your dishes once they come out of the washer. Here at Alpha Appliance Services Inc., we want to talk about how this happens and what you can do to troubleshoot it/fix it (or, in some cases, when you will require a dishwasher repair).

Filter Blockage

One of the main reasons why your dishwasher is likely not draining is due to a blocked filter. It is always recommended that you check your filter before looking at any of your other dishwasher compartments. In order to do so, you must simply:

  • Remove the lower basket from the basin of the washer. From then you can remove what is known as the central filter.
  • Once the filter has been taken out, you can now clean it with hot water and detergent to get rid of any excess food, dirt or grime that has built up overtime.
  • When the filter has been thoroughly cleaned, you can now insert it back into the dishwasher where it came from.

This kind of routine should be done periodically, and as often as you can possibly do it. When you do, you’re at much less of a risk of having your dishwasher overflow with water.

Faulty Dishwasher Timer

Dishwasher machines that are newer will often include a mechanical timer so your dishwasher cycles maintain a certain length. If this part of the dishwasher begins to become faulty it can lead to the machine thinking the cycle is done when it is only midway through, leading to issues in water drainage. Luckily, these timers can be reconfigured as long as it complies to the manufacturers guidelines.

Broken Valve Flapper

In your dishwasher, the valve flapper helps to flow water in one direction. This compartment will not just allow clean water to enter your machine, but will also work to prevent dirty, grimy water from re-entering the device. If this area is either faulty or blocked, it can lead to excess water inside the base of your dishwasher. This will, consequently, lead to dishes not being able to be cleaned properly as the dirty water never truly exits the appliance.

To check that this compartment works, simply look to see that it is opening fully during the draining section of your cycle, but closing once the washing process has begun. If it does not, then there is an issue with your valve flapper that needs to be fixed by a professional.
