Avoid Washing Machine Mistakes

Although washing machines are generally quite reliable and durable, repeated mistakes of misuse will cause any machine, regardless of its type, to malfunction. Since appliances cost a lot, you want to be 100% certain that you are doing everything within your power to make them last as long as possible so they end up being worth your money. After all, the last thing you want to be doing after purchasing an expensive machine is purchasing services for an appliance repair as well. To learn about some of the most common washing machine mistakes that affect your washer’s lifespan and how to avoid them, check out our information we here at Alpha Appliance Services Inc. have offered below.

Search Your Clothes Pockets!

One of the most harmful ways to damage your washing machine is by letting loose items such as coins, pens and other bulky items fly around inside of your washer’s drum. Tissues and other things like sand can disable the machine altogether, whilst things like coins can block a washers filter and prevent it from working properly. Not only does this type of stuff end up damaging your washing machine, but stationery such as pens and markers can end up affecting the look of your clothes and staining them permanently.

If you know that you’re washing a lot of items with pockets such as pajama pants, jeans, jackets or aprons, always check the pockets before washing and get rid of any items within these pouches. You may just be surprised as to what’s hiding in these clothes you never even noticed, so always check beforehand.

Never Overload Your Washer

While our team understands that laundry can be a pain and the desire to get it all done in one go is strong, we will always recommend that you never overload your washer. While you may initially believe that doing this maxes out efficiency and saves you time, there is a much higher chance that clothes that are overloaded into a washer will come out less clean than if it was loaded normally. The worst part, however? Overloading a machine has been proven to lead to machine issues such as motor burnouts, a worn down washer belt and more. To avoid this, always check your appliances manual as they will usually have information on the washers maximum weight for each cycle.

Make Sure Your Machine Is Level to the Floor

When a load of laundry is being washed, it is very common for a washing machine’s drum to move around erratically. This movement is normal, as the weight of the clothes, water and detergent combined with the spinning of the drum will create these kinds of actions. What isn’t normal, however, is when these movements are accompanied with an unlevelled machine.

When your washer is not leveled to the floor, these otherwise typical movements can cause your machine to tilt, bash and shake in ways it should not. These additional movements will cause the machine to go through a lot of wear and tear overtime, shortening the lifespan of this appliance by a significant margin. To avoid this, always be certain your machine is level to the floor perfectly. You can test this by using your hands to try and lightly tilt the machine in both directions. If it does not buckle and stays stuck to the floor, you know that everything will likely be fine. Other warning signs your machine isn’t level to the floor are irregular, loud banging sounds during the washing process. When in doubt, contact a professional and ensure that your machine has been installed professionally.
