While there can be a lot of small annoyances throughout one’s life, there is nothing quite worse than washing your clothes and finding that they are all stained with colours and dyes from your other clothes. Although this isn’t nearly as bad as having to get a washer repair, problems are problems and this one is no exception. Expecting clean, white clothes to come out perfect and finding them stained with pink is a terrible feeling, especially when some of your favourite clothes get caught in the crossfire.
Like any issue, we want to be aware of its root cause. This way, we can analyze how it happens and make sure it doesn’t happen again. If you are noticing that your clothes are being messed with in the washer and want to prevent colours from running in the washer, check out the advice we have to offer here at Alpha Appliance Services.
Never Overload Your Machine!
One of the easiest ways to increase the chances of colours running in the washer is by overloading your machine. This may initially sound confusing, but the reason why this is a bad idea is because the more clothes are stuffed into your washer, the more likely it is for coloured clothing to rub against other items causing an increased risk of dye leakage. The more friction during a wash, the easier it is for colours to transfer and get onto other items of clothing. When washing bold colours, avoid washing these materials with whites and always be sure to load the proper amount.
Avoid Clothes That Create This Risk
While most (if not all) clothes come with certain dyes mixed into them, there are certain warning signs to look out for on clothing tags that separate regular-dyed clothing from clothing that has the chance of its dye seeping out. A few of the phrases to look out for on clothing tags that indicate the dye may run in your washer include:
- “Wash before first use”
- “Hand wash”
- “Do not use detergent”
- “Colours may run”
- “Turn inside out when washing”
If you see any of these phrases on a clothing tag, make sure that you wash these clothes separately if you decide to purchase them. While some clothes will require you doing this just once, others will not. When in doubt, ensure that these clothes are mixed in with black clothing.
Set Your Machine To The Right Preset
When you have coloured clothes with dye you don’t quite trust, never wash them in hot water. The chances of the colour seeping off of your clothes increases the hotter the water in your washer is. While in past years, washing your clothing in cold water seemed to be more of an inconvenience, recent technology has changed that and most clothing washes just as good in cold water. To decrease the risk of colours running, always make sure that a laundry load with bright colours, such as orange or red, is washed with cold water. Washing with cold water will also save energy, so you’re doing good in more ways than one when all is said and done.
