When you have a fully functioning home with all the bells and whistles, chances are you have a lot of appliances as well. While all those appliances can come in handy, if one or more breaks down things can get complicated quickly. Instead of waiting for the worse to happen, Alpha Appliance Services has a few suggestions on how to keep your appliances in great condition.

Oven Maintenance

It is important to periodically check the seal on your oven to ensure that you are not losing heat. A faulty seal can result in a loss of as much as 20% of the heat produced. This results in longer cook times and higher energy bills. Look around the edge of the oven door for warped, damaged, or broken areas. A damaged seal will need to be replaced, but it is much more affordable than a new oven. You should also make a point of deep cleaning your oven at least once every three months. Spills and drips may cause fires if left unchecked. While you are cleaning the oven, take some time to check out the heating elements. Any damage or faulty elements should be replaced as soon as possible.

Fridge and Freezer Maintenance

Cleaning the coils in the back of your refrigerator is as important as cleaning the inside. Dirty coils will increase the amount of energy needed to cool your fridge resulting in higher bills and potentially overheating your appliance. Make a point to vacuum the coils twice yearly with a hose attachment or handheld. It is also important to de-ice your freezer compartment when too much ice accumulates. Anytime the ice on the walls is at least a half an inch thick, it’s time to de-ice. Too much frost can block or jam the blades in your refrigerator, preventing it from cooling efficiently. If defrosting isn’t successful, you may need to replace the blades.

Washing Machine Maintenance

Washing machines tend to build up a lot of mold which can leave your clothes smelling rancid. In some cases, the mold can go so far as to corrode the drum support shafts. Make sure to run regular maintenance cycles on your washer to get rid of any bacteria. Simply add a mixture of detergent remover and limescale into the drum and let it run on it hottest setting. Wiping down the drying door gasket and using good quality washing powder will also prevent buildup. Washing down the drum once a month will help keep your clothes odor-free, and inspecting the hoses of your washer will prevent costly leaks.

Dryer Maintenance

Cleaning the lint filters after every use will ensure that your appliance works at top efficiency. It will also reduce the risks of spontaneous combustion. Most dryers also have sensors, which you should clean with a stainless steel cleaner to ensure it always functions properly.
