Refrigerator Maintenance Guide

Refrigerators are a large appliance that are a staple to almost any home. They help keep food and drinks at the optimal temperature, and it is safe to say your home would function quite differently without it. In many ways, a fridge is integral to the proper function and convenience of any home.

In order for this appliance to last you a long time, you will need to ensure it’s properly maintained. Without the right maintenance, this device could run into issues quite quickly, and in some cases, stop working completely even though it’s meant to last longer. This will inevitably lead to having an appliance repair done to fix all of the issues. Here at Alpha Appliance Services Inc., we want to provide you with some easy to follow tips on how to properly maintain your refrigerator so it stays at its optimal functionality for years to come.

Clean Condenser Coils

When the condenser coils on your fridge collect too much dust and debris, your fridge can shut down or stop working properly, requiring an immediate repair. These coils are important to your fridge’s functionality, as they prevent the fridge from releasing too much heat. The chances of your condenser coils becoming even dirtier increase when you own furry pets. In order to ensure this fridge compartment stays clean and problem-free, be sure to clean your coils with a coil cleaning brush and a vacuum every six months (at the very least).

Be Careful What You Store!

Did you know that a lot of parts go into making sure that your fridge consistently meets the ideal temperature? Matter of fact, thermal mass (aka placing items inside of your fridge) is a necessity when it comes to this temperature regulation. Without items, an empty fridge can not regulate its temperature efficiently. In order to make sure your fridge is cooling its absolute best, be sure that enough items are stored inside your fridge. If you prefer to keep a fridge that’s a bit on the empty side, you can take up space by adding a jug of water inside to help keep everything balanced.

Clear the Vents of Any Obstructions

The vents that are located inside of your freezer work to circulate air into the refrigerator. When these vents are blocked or the freezer is stuffed with too many items, both the freezer and the fridge will not be able to cool themselves properly. One of the most important tasks when it comes to fridge maintenance is moving any obstructions away from the freezer vents in order for them to work efficiently. In order for your fridge to stay at its most efficient, be sure to fill it to about three quarters full — not too empty (as mentioned previously), but not too crowded either!
