Washing Machine Door Not Opening

A broken washing machine can cause a myriad of problems within the home, as it is a necessary tool to keep all of the fabrics & clothes free of any stains and dirt. However much you may be looking after your washing machine, a door jam may occur from time to time. In an instance like this, you may want to call an appliance repair company right away. Luckily, most washing machines have a manual release that can fix the door jam and let you continue your washing as normal.

Front loading machines have a safety mechanism that is known as an interlock. When a washing cycle begins in this type of washer, the door locks until the end of the cycle, and will not open anywhere in the middle of the process. If you wait until the end of the cycle and the door is still not unlocked, then we here at Alpha Appliance Services Inc. have come up with a troubleshooting guide on what may be wrong with your machine.

Drainage Issues

If you can look through the washing machine glass and see that the water is still in the drum, chances are your machine is experiencing drainage problems. If you decide that you want to manually release the door, be sure to lay out towels underneath the machine to catch the water when the door opens. Also be ready to mop, depending on how much water is in the machine.

The best way to avoid this drainage problem is by keeping your washing machine clean, because this keeps any blockages out of the filter. The good news is you can manually drain most washing machines by clearing any blockages from the drain filters or draining the machine with the pump drain tube. If you aren’t sure which way to go about doing this job, you can call a professional and get the help you need.

Pressure Switch

A pressure switch issue could also be the reason why your washing machine door isn’t opening. When the machine lock is still being energized, the machine cannot properly reset and open the door. In order to fix this issue, try turning off the appliance at its main power supply for 5-10 minutes, and then attempt to open the door.

Faulty Interlock Device

When a washing machine is being used constantly in a short period of time, it can overheat. If your appliance has overheated, the circuits on the interlock could have stopped working due to the heating issue. More often than not, the handles on these machines are quite delicate and trying to pry the door open when it’s locked can damage it further.

Usually, if you let the machine cool down after an overheat such as this, the issue should sort itself out. If the door is still having problems, contacting an appliance repair professional is the next step.
