In these warm and humid summer months, you want to be sure that your freezer is as cold as it can be. That way, it can keep all of the foods and drinks you like during a sunny warm day nice and cold. But what if you’re beginning to notice that your freezer isn’t going below a certain temperature? Are things not getting cold enough, and it feels as though items are starting to defrost in your freezer? In this instance, hiring a freezer repair service is recommended, as this is not a normal thing for a freezer to be doing. There are a number of problems that could lead to this malfunction, so we here at Alpha Appliance Services Inc. would like to explain what they are.
Door Seals
Most people are not aware of how many times we open and close a freezer door. All of this opening and closing is slowly but surely going to cause wear and tear on the freezer’s door seal, so you want to be sure that the seal is still functioning properly. The best way to test if your seal needs replacing is by doing the dollar bill test. Simply place a dollar bill halfway into your freezer’s door seal and close the freezer shut. Next, go to pull out the dollar bill. If it has a hard time coming out, then it is safe to assume your door seal is not the issue. If it slides out easily, however, it might be time to look into getting a new door seal/cleaning your current one.
It is important to note that door seals may not work properly if your freezer isn’t level with the ground. This means being tilted in any direction other than flush onto the floor.
Temperature Settings
We’ve all accidentally meant to do one thing and done another instead. Sometimes, it’s easy to accidentally make the freezer warmer when you were wanting to make it colder. The dials on most freezers and fridges are very easy to use, so take a minute to look at the temperature setting and change it if needed.
Evaporator Coils
If you want to be able to take a look at your evaporator coils, you will need to remove one of the interior panels. This can be a difficult process, and the last thing you’d want to do is break your fridge/freezer further. Luckily, there is a way to indicate your evaporator coils aren’t working without taking your appliance apart. The best way to look for damaged evaporator coils is by looking for ice on the interior walls, ceiling and floor of your freezer.
Condenser Coils
Just as your evaporator coils can become covered in frost, your condenser coils can be littered with dust and debris. When this happens, the coils are not as effective when trying to disperse heat. Before you clean the condenser coils on your freezer, make sure to unplug the appliance to ensure there is no electricity going to it. The best way to remove all of the dust from condenser coils is by using vacuum and sucking all of it out. Be ready to move your freezer all types of ways to remove loose debris.
